Lamidi Olonade Fakeye was a fifth generation Nigerian sculptor. He was born in Ila Orangun, Nigeria, and began carving in 1938, under the direction of his father. In 1949, he was an apprentice of sculptor George Bamidele Arowoogun. In 1955, he began work at a primary school in Lagos as an art instructor. His first solo exhibition was in 1960 at the British Council in Nigeria. In 1962, he was named artist-in-residence at Western Michigan University. In 1964 he had an exhibition at the United States Information Service in Nigeria. In 1971 there was an exhibition in Ibadan showing three generations of Fakeye carvers. Fakeye was appointed to the Faculty of Arts, University of Ile-Ife in 1978. He published his autobiography in 1996. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Smithsonian in 1999. He died in 2009.
