Erna Clara von Engel-Baiersdorf (nee Baiersdorf de Erdos) was born to councilor Carl Baiersdorf von Erdos and Clara (nee Redlich). In 1908, Erna married Richard Baier Erdosi. In 1919, she married again to Dr. Robert Angel de Janosi (1883-1943). Erna was a painter, sculptor, anthropological sculpturist who worked in museums in Vienna, Budapest, Muhlbach, and Pecs. On July 7, 1944 she was imprisoned in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, and transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp on December 9, 1944. Following World War II, Erna's sister Margrit Reif, who lived in Vancouver, contacted T.P.O Menzies, the Vancouver City Museum's Secretary and Curator, in efforts to find Erna work in Canada. Erna was invited to Canada by Mr. Menzies, and she stayed with the City Museum for four years, eventually acting as curator of the Anthropological and Paleontological Department. She also exhibited artwork in the 1948 and 1951 annual BC Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
