John Davenport Norton Clayton was born in Bella Bella in 1891. His parents, John and Elizabeth, operated a store in Bella Coola from c. 1882 to 1910, when his father died. According to his marriage certificate he was still living in Bella Coola in 1917. Around the mid-1920s he appears to have moved to Quadra Island, as his 1961 death certificate said he had been living in Quathiaski Cove, on Quadra Island, for 37 years.
