George was born in 1918 in Toronto, Ontario. He was educated at Upper Canada College, and Trinity College of the University of Toronto (philosophy). He received a Littauer Fellowship to Harvard University and was a 1940 Rhodes Scholar for Ontario. In 1945 he entered Canada’s Foreign Service, with postings to Greece, the United Nations, NATO and France, and in the 1960s-70s he held ambassadorial postings to Sri Lanka; India & Nepal; and Iran & Kuwait. In 1978 he co-founded the Threshold Foundation. George married Caroline Parfitt in 1942 (through to 1996); in 2005 he married Barbara Wright. He died in Toronto in 2020.
