The Smith family are members of the Lawitsis and descend from the second-ranking namima of that group, the Nu'nEmasEqalis (old ones from the beginning) (Boas 1966:40). The Lawitsis moved to Kalugwis after 1850, from a nearby village site on Klaoitsis Island. Peter S. Smith was the son of Smith Sewid (also known as Sewid Smith). His elder half-sister was Abaya Martin.
