Clavir graduated from the University of Toronto in Anthropology, from Queen’s University with a Master of Art Conservation and, later, from the University of Leicester, England, with a Doctorate in Museum Studies. Clavir worked for the Royal Ontario Museum, Parks Canada National Historic Sites Service, then as MOA Conservator from 1980 to 2004. Dr. Clavir authored the book "Preserving What is Valued: Museums, Conservation and First Nations" (UBC Press, 2002).
