Alfred Joseph began carving in 1967 when he attended the Kitanmax School of Northwest Indian Design at 'Ksan. Joseph became the hereditary chief Gisday’wa in 1974, after the passing of his uncle. He belonged to the Gitdumden Clan, House of Kaiyexwenitts, and left a profound legacy as a distinguished champion of his Wet’suwet’en people. His leadership was evident in his leading role in the historic Delgamuukw-Gisday’wa court case that recognized and affirmed Aboriginal Rights and Title to traditional lands in the Supreme Court of Canada.
