Mary Anne Barkhouse is both a metalsmith and a mixed-media artist. She was born in Vancouver to a Kwakwaka'wakw mother from Alert Bay, and a non-native Nova-Scotian father. She grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. From 1975-1985, she played electric bass guitar in punk rock bands such as The Restless Virgins. She graduated with honors from the New Media Program at the Ontario College of Art (OCA) in Toronto in 1991. She is the great-great grandaughter of carver Charlie James, the great niece of carver Mungo Martin, the great niece of carver Ellen Neel, and the niece of carver Robert (Bobby) Neel. Her artistic influences include metalsmith Ken Vickerson, metalsmith Beth Alber, and internationally acclaimed metalsmith Lois Etherington Betteridge. Her work has been shown across Canada, in New York state, and in England and Ireland. Her work is represented in many public and private collections in Canada. Working with a variety of media, Barkhouse examines environmental concerns and indigenous culture through the use of animal imagery. She is a dog and animal lover.
