Raised in Ukwanalis (Kingcome Inlet), Simon Dick is a Kwakwaka'wakw carver and Kwikwasut'inuxw chief, fluent in the Kwakwala language, dance, and teachings. A maternal and paternal descendant of grandfather chiefs, Dick was tutored by both. After going to Victoria, he apprenticed with Tony Hunt at the Arts of the Raven Gallery for four years. He learned traditional languages and music by studying for a year with Chief Sam Henderson. Simon Dick worked with Bill Reid in 1986 where he designed and constructed the 40 foot high Thunderbird for the Canadian Pavillion at the World's Fair.
