Helen Kalvak was the matriarch of Holman Island printmaking. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1975) and a Member of the Order of Canada (1979). Many of her prints show traditional life, some focussing on the spirit world and shamanism. Her father was a noted shaman and many believe she was trained to be a shaman as well.
