Joan Waddell went to Korea in 1953 to work as a nurse in the immediate post-war period, when the war had resulted in massive destruction. For the first two years she set up nurses’ training, working in a hospital run by the Red Cross. There she met her husband, Wilf, a United Church Missionary, who worked in Korea in the 1950s. They married and stayed in rural areas in Korea until 1958. He worked in rural churches and she worked in a mobile clinic in rural areas around Seoul. Their daughter was born there.
