Honourable Alfred J. Scow was born April 10, 1927 in Alert Bay. He was the eldest son of William D. Scow, hereditary chief of the Kwikwasut'inuxw Nation, and Alice (nee Whonnock). Scow was the first person of aboriginal descent to graduate from law school in B.C., the first aboriginal called to the bar in B.C., and the first aboriginal judge appointed to the Provincial Court of B.C. He retired from the provincial court bench in 1992. Scow was awarded the Order of Canada in 2000 and the Order of B.C. in 2004. A gathering was held at MOA in the Haida House to celebrate his retirment and achievements.
