John Spottiswood Tait was born in Portobello, a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland. He travelled to Vancouver in 1897. In 1898 he joined the militia and became a lieutenant in the Garrison Artillery, which later became the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles. In 1902 he became a captain, and later that year married Lilian Nelson Moore, of California. By 1909 he had his own business in Vancouver, J.S. Tait and Company, and in 1919 he purchased the Vancouver Pipe and Foundry Company. He died in Vancouver in 1951.
