Beaudry was born on the Poundmaker Reserve, near North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He attended Indian Residential School in Delmas, Saskatchewan, and in 1941 joined the Canadian Army and served in combat in Europe. After being wounded he was captured by German troops in 1944, and remained a prisoner of war until liberation in the spring of 1945. Beaudry began to paint in 1958 (self-taught) after health problems (from the war) forced his retirement from the Canadian National Railways. He was the great-grandson of Plains Cree Chief Poundmaker, Askeyjoesno.
