John Livingston was closely associated with the Hunt family (Fort Rupert) for many years and was adopted into this Kwakwaka'wakw family. He was taught to carve by Henry and Tony Hunt in the early 1970's and worked on many large commissions with Henry Hunt, Tony Hunt, Calvin Hunt, Tony Hunt Jr., Don Yeomans, Robert Davidson, Tim Paul and Art Thompson. In partnership with Tony Hunt, Livingston opened the Arts of the Raven in 1969, which was a major force in Northwest Coast art for over 20 years. Livingston was regarded as a teacher and mentor to young carvers, and also known for his expertise in restoration, replication and appraisal of Northwest Coast artworks.
