Gloria Cranmer was the daughter of Kwakwaka’wakw hereditary Chief Dan Cramner, and is credited with being the first indigenous student admitted to UBC, in 1949, where she graduated in anthropology. She worked at UBC as an assistant curator at the Museum of Anthropology, as well as with a UBC linguist to develop a written orthography of the Kwak'wala language. Webster helped found the U’Mista Cultural Centre at Alert Bay ("Yalis), where she was a longtime curator.
