UBC Professor emeritus, Merton Yarwood Williams Ph.D., D.Sc. was born near Bloomfield, Ontario, on 21 June 1883. He graduated from Queen's in 1909 with a B.Sc. degree in mining engineering. On the advice of R.W. Brock, he gained admission to the graduate school of Yale University and was granted a Ph.D. in 1912. He joined the regular staff of the Geological Survey, spending the first nine years of service in Ontario. In 1921 Dr. Williams accepted an appointment as associate professor of paleontology and stratigraphy at UBC. In 1926 he became a full professor and in 1936 was appointed head of the Department of Geology and Geography. He remained at this post until his retirement in 1950. In 1925 he helped found the UBC Geological Museum (later named the M.Y. Williams Geology Museum), UBC’s first museum.
