Reid was born at Bella Bella and comes from the house of the Eagle from his father’s side and the house of the Raven on his mother’s side. His ancestral name ‘Nusi’, means ‘Full Moon.’ Ian has always been inspired by his elders. His main mentor is his great aunt, Mary Hunt, one of the great Heiltsuk matriarchs. Nusi’s coming of age as a dancer, singer, artist and canoemaker has inspired and given meaning to his artwork. He sees his work as a sacred responsibility and trust that started at the age of 11 when his three aunts handed him a drum and instructed him to learn to sing. His art is influenced by a number of teachers, late Heiltsuk artist, David Gladstone, late Cyril Carpenter, Simon Dick, and Mike Dangeli. One of 'Nusi’s goals is to create works of art that his people can use in ceremonies and potlatches.
