Alice Ravenhill (1859-1954) was born in England where she worked as Secretary of the Royal British Nurses' Association (1894-1897) and as a university lecturer on Home Economics at the University of London. Ravenhill immigrated to Canada in 1910, where she continued to work on social welfare issues. She established women's institutions in B.C. as well as the Society for the Furtherance of B.C. Indian Arts and Crafts in Victoria (later renamed the B.C. Indian Arts and Welfare Society). In 1948 she was honoured with the degree of D.Sc. from UBC. Her publications include, The Native Tribes of British Columbia (Banfield, 1938) and A Corner Stone of Canadian Culture: An Outline of the Arts and Crafts of the Indian Tribes of British Columbia (B.C.P.M., 1944). Her papers are stored at UBC Special Collections.
