Henry Hunt, Kwakwaka'wakw, 1923-1985

Henry Hunt's grandfather was George Hunt, Franz Boas' principal informant; his father was Jonathan Hunt (c. 1887-1975). Henry trained under his father-in-law, Mungo Martin and was influenced by Arthur Shaughnessy. From 1954 to 1975 he was assistant, then senior carver at the then Provincial Museum. As one of the most senior and important B.C. First Nations artists, he is principally renowned for his masks and totem poles. Henry Hunt received an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria in 1983. Many of his works are housed at the Royal British Columbia Museum, and his carvings are found around the world. A 30 metre pole, he carved for the royal family, now stands in Windsor Great Park, near London. He carved a memorial pole to Mungo Martin with his son Tony Hunt, which was the first pole erected in the Alert Bay graveyard for many years.
