Dr. John Edward Michael Kew, Professor Emeritus, Anthropology, UBC. Kew enrolled at UBC in 1950, graduating in Anthropology. In 1955 he married Della Charles of Musqueam. Kew worked for three years as an assistant to Wilson Duff, then studied among Metis, Cree and Chipewyan peoples in northern Saskatchewan, and later with the Musqueam, Nazko, Kluskus, and others. Mike obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Washington, Seattle in 1970. In the early 1970s he was one of a core of Northwest Coast anthropologists at UBC, along with Wilson Duff and Wayne Suttles. He later held a cross-appointment, as a part-time curator at the Museum of Anthropology and part-time professor in Anthropology. Kew was also Acting Director of the Museum during Dr. Ames’ sabbatical in 1991-2. Following his retirement in 1997 he and his second wife, Barbara Williamson, lived on Gabriola Island, moving back to Vancouver in 2013.
