Carlos Laate is a Zuni potter who began practicing in 1989. Carlos learned to make pottery by listening to and observing his step-grandmother, Daisy Nampeyo Hooee, who was part of a long line of famous names in the Native American art world. Carlos was also strongly influenced by another family member: his aunt Jennie Laate. Through these teachers Carlos learned the classic Zuni style: a white slip on pinkish clay base, decorated with water creatures, geckos and deer. His design elements cover all the traditional motifs including deer house, rosettes, rain birds, lines, curves, and geometrics.
