A full-time carver, Gerry Dudoward started carving around 1970. He had training from Pat Dixon for 6 months and Norman Tait for 3 months, however he was mainly self-taught as an artist. He prefered to use symbols and crests in his work that were relative to the Tsimshian culture. He stated, "This work is my life and my life-long occupation".
