Charles Arthur Banks, CMG, was born 1885 in Thames, New Zealand, where he studied engineering. After obtaining his degree, in 1912, he immigrated to BC, with his (French born) wife Jean. During WWI both he and his wife served overseas. After returning to Vancouver he became manager of British Columbia Silver Mines Ltd. In 1925 he co-founded Placer Development Co, which had mining properties in several countries. The couple apparently became wealthy through gold mines in New Guinea and Colombia.
