Artist and manufacturer, Joseph Richardson Jr. was a member of the famous Richardson family of Philadelphia silversmiths, whose output in the mid-1700s was prodigious. Ref. Alberts p. 16. In 1777 Joseph Jr. and his brother, Nathaniel, inherited the family business, which had been established by their grandfather. In 1790 Joseph Richardson Jr. began to work without his brother, Nathaniel, stamping his silver with his JR mark. In 1795 Joseph Jr. was appointed assayer to the Mint, a position he held for 35 years. Collector gives working dates of 1777 to 1795. The manufacturer liquidation date is 1827.
