Smith was born in New York and graduated with her BA from Columbia University in 1934. She finished her PhD in 1938. She was president of the American Ethnological Society. Smith undertook ethnographic fieldwork in the Pacific Northwest (1935-36, 1938, 1945), and among Sikhs in British Columbia and California (1943), and in the Punjab (1948-49). In 1952 she moved to Britain and married H. Farrant Akehurst. She was honorary secretary of the Royal Anthropological Institute in London, 1956 and taught part-time in the Anthropology Department of the London School of Economics.
