Roy Vickers was born in Greenville. He apprenticed at the Gitanmax School of Northwest Indian Design and was influenced by Vernon Stephens. As a devout Christian, Vickers combined native and Christian themes in his work. His work has been included in many exhibitions, including a one man show at the UBC Museum of Anthropology. In recognition of his achievement of excellence in the Arts he was invited to attend a celebration of the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, in Ottawa in 1977, and in 1987 he was presented to the Queen during her visit to Vancouver. In recent years the Walkus family bestowed on him the name: Tlakwagila (Copper on Your Back).
