Description
Rectangular flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Elongated watch-spring construction. Cotton string attached to rim of one corner, jute cord attached to rim of 3 other corners. Remnants of hide loops, probably for carrying, also attached to long sides of basket. Imbricated rows of alternating red and dark cherry bark and bear grass.
History Of Use
According to Nlak'pamux Elder Shirley Sterling this type of basket was used for picking berries. The loops are for attaching the basket to a belt that you would wear around your waist to leave your hands free for picking.
Note submitted with basket by Judge Castillou reads: "For trinkets found when warrior searches for his medicine. Finds inspiration direction and different charms for luck as he sweat bath(e)s in his adolescent state before (e)merging as a warrior to take the ordeal. Finely woven ceremonial basket different than work basket. Quelchena Creek, Lakaplan, Quelchena, B.C."
